A Milestone

Although there has been lots of talk about the new team, last weekend was the first real team gathering. You never really know if it is going to happen until people actually show up. And what do you know? They did. You can read about it on the MOB Racing blog.

It is a milestone for me, because it means that I really am responsible for a bike racing team. Holy Crap! How did that happen? It was only two years ago that I e-mailed Thad about joining his team.

As is my lot in life, I seem to find myself in charge of things. I don't go looking for it, but things just seem to turn out that way.

Don't get me wrong. I love my life! I'm just amazed that such a group of talented cyclists would follow me into anything. Go figure.

I think it's well established amongst the bikers who know you, that there will always be good beer!

Hahaha, just kidding. I think you'll enjoy it and be an very good asset to the beginners.

Good beer seems to be one of my "Keys to Success" for running a team. Its my secret weapon.

Its gonna be fun!

I drove by your house (well, at least the exit to your house) today on my way to and from Waverly. Buzzing along on Highway 20 this afternoon with one heck of a wind and blowing snow, I'm sure glad we did our ride last Saturday and not this Saturday.

Was that it for our Winter Training group ride, or will we be having another arctic ride? ;-)

Bruce and Paul, I'd like to host a ride up here in another month. Would you be willing to drive up here Bruce? We could do a little gravel and check out out the new unfinished bike trail to Briggs Woods. I have permission from the Park and Rec director to ride on it. The food may not be as good as Paul and Christy's but we'd manage. I have DVD's of the Coors Classic. Smiley

Yup, I can drive.

Let me know what date as we have entered recital and concert season at Simpson which means as a faculty member I have to attend just about everything between now and the end of April.

Bruce - Yup. Lucky planning on our part as to the choice of weekends. Althought I've ridden in this type of weather, it is not as much fun as we had last weekend.

Nick -

Sounds good. Let me know a date and I'll make an annoucement to the others.

Do either of you want to become MOB Blog contributers? That is also a good way to get info out there.

yes, I'd like to be a contributor, hook me up, Nick

Nick, check your e-mail and follow the instructions.

Like what, Paul? Race reports, gear selection, photographs, best beer to consume following a training ride, etc...?

By the way, I had 2 Fat Tire draws yesterday at the local sports bar/restaurant with the wife after hamster caging for 70 minutes on the trainer. That's the first time I had tried that beer. Thumbs up on it!

I'd follow ya Paul!! I'm looking forward to rockin a MOB kit...they certainly look bitchin!! Also, on another note...I found the sweetest shop out here...it's half bike shop...half bar!! With live music most nights...What more could you ask for, one stop shopping in my mind!

Yup, yup, yup, and yup! Its all good.

I realize its near blasphmey on a biking blog, but I prefer something with more hoppiness in my beer. Don't get me wrong - I really like Fat Tire. I've never turned one down. But the hops and malt are a bit too balanced for my taste. I prefer a beer with a more agressive hop profile, one that bites back. Just my two cents - flame away! And yes, in addition to being a bike geek, I'm a beer geek.

Carney -

Glad to hear you are on board. We'll get you a kit somehow! The Bike shop/bar sounds great. I've been looking for a post- retirement career. I think I just found it.

I don't know if they sell it in Iowa, but you should try New Belgium Triple or Abbey....they are tasty and certainly bite more than fat tire!! Oh yeah and did I mention that they are 7.8% and 7.0% respectively...cant go wrong there!!

Hey, I'm game for hoppiness. I got spoiled living over in Vienna. I had access to fresh Budvar (the original Budweiser from the Czech Republic) that is damn good. In fact, it was nearly impossible to find a bad beer in Austria/Czech/Germany/Switzerland. They do beer right over there.

As long as a spoon doesn't stand straight up in the mug from the thickness of the beer, I'll drink it.

That's what I'm talking about! Cory gave me an Abbey once. Yummy. It's probably good that it's not available in Iowa. It has a complexity of flavor that was had to believe in a beer that wasn't brewed in Belgium.

Bruce -

Oh, to spend some adult beverage time in Vienna. I'm pretty jealous. Even if the spoon does stand up, I'd stil give it a try. I'm just not real hep on the wheat/sprite stuff the kids drink. Sounds like a wine cooler/malt beverage too me.

You're talking about Radler Bier (cyclist's beer). It's beer mixed with lemon-lime (what they call Zitronenlimonade). I can honestly say I never tried one while living there between 1991-2003. It didn't even sound good enough to warrant a try from my standpoint, so I just avoided it.

Now I would drink the white wine from the prior season's crop and mix it with soda water while sitting outside at the Heuriger in the summer. It was tart, young white wine and cutting it with some bubbly water in the summer would help make it drinkable.

Then the headaches would follow...

Radler Bier? So that's what it is called. I just remember readding about it in a beer brewing book.

Boy, you really are a wealth of information. We should hang out more often.

Pretty sad when one's knowledge narrows down to opera booze and skiing. 8-]
